How much faster is the core i7 x980 then my Q6600

Let me start by saying I love

Let me start by saying I love your site Rodney! I've been hiding in the woods for the last few years and seems everytings changed way more than I thought..lol I think I'm gonna waste the $700 and go with the i7 980x. Been six or seven years since I've built this pc. Asus p5gl-mx P4 640 3.20GHz , it's been threw hell and back. Hd's crash. My son gave it a bath in coke one time and I had to clean the motherboard. And about three weeks ago when I started using it again after a long break in the closet. I was sitting here surffing the video's and heard a loud crash in the case. About three minutes later the system just turn off.. The fan on my video card flew off..lol Bought a good $60 card for it. But I think 6 or 7 years for a pc I know ran 24/7 for at lest 5 years aint bad. So it's time for a new build for me. And I'm gonna pony the i7 980x.

the game is not yet released

ohhh... in gaming - not a whole lot of a difference.
most of the utilization in games comes from the GPU and the FPS are mainly detriment by the GPU and not the CPU.

errr, it all comes down to

errr, it all comes down to what tasks you are doing. The X6 is a GREAT CPU. It would beat the 920 in a lot of different tasks.

This thing is a rendering monster, converts video at amazing speeds and would definatly do the trick when gaming, as it mostly comes down to not bottlenecking the GPU. Granted the i7's is better for gaming, but you would NEVER be able to tell the difference, and I'd say the X6 would do better in newer games like BC2 where there's a much better utilization of all the cores.

When running software that actually requires a lot of your GPU, there's not a lot seperating it. http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/amd_phenom2_x6_1090t/17.htm
Check out the extreme scores. There's less than a 100 points separating the 980x and the 1090T

Here is another example. http://www.guru3d.com/article/phenom-ii-x6-1055t-1090t-review/18
The 980x and 1090T performing equally in BC2.

Stop being so AMD hostile. It's an excellent CPU for the money, and while Intel DOES have the upper hand overall, make no mistake, it does not mean that the X6 has it's strengths in some fields.

Check out the vantage performance scores here as well.

Overclocked to 4,1Ghz it seems to run as a stock 980x, while a stock 1090T beats the 940 :)

Take a look at these numbers.

Next, I went to the THW review of the 1090T BE and extracted the following data comparing it to the i7 930. Each percentage is a measure of how much better +ve %(or worse, -ve %) the 1090T BE is against the i7 930.

Mpeg2 to H.264 10%
VOB to MP4 22%
MP2 to MP4 22%
Photoshop -2%
3D modelling 7%
Compression -10%
Crysis -4%

Idle Power 34%
Load Power -17%

Hope this clears things up a bit.

The i7 980x is not worth it for most people. If you have the money sure, but it's not gonna fall that much in price, and a regular 4-core i7 is more than adquate for almost anyone.

I'm not trying to advocate AMD here, I own a i7 930 myself, but I am telling you that if your absolutely stuck on the idea of a 6 core CPU. The 1090T is definatly not a bad choice

well the amd six cores arnt

well the amd six cores arnt as fast as even the i7 920 series cpuès

No, the only intel 6 cores

No, the only intel 6 cores are the 970 and the 980x.

If you want a powerfull 6 core, why not go with the AMD 1055/1090T? They are excellent CPUs.

is the 950 a six core

is the 950 a six core

Don't be so sure the prices

Don't be so sure the prices will drop mate. It will more likely phase out once 22nm tech gets out.

It would probably whip Q6600 ass, but for a gamers point of view a normal i7 core will be more than adequate. Or an i5 for that matter

I'd also recommend a 950 now that the prices are dropped by 50% on them.

I don't know about where you live but in Norway where I live, it now costs the same as a 930. Better overclocker - less heat, more multipliers.

I'd rather leave you with this - If you need a 980x, you wouldn't need to ask. You'd know allready.

Ill wait for the prices to

Ill wait for the prices to drop on the 980x like the Q6600 did

IMO, the i7 980x is a waste

IMO, the i7 980x is a waste of money for most. Get a 920/930 and OC it.

The Q6600 was beast a few

The Q6600 was beast a few years ago (and still is) but when compared to a 980x, there is more than a $700 price difference...I think that speaks for itself.
