I have a new Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB (only a few hours of use on it) and sometimes I hear a light grinding noise, it isn't loud at all and rarely happens.
Here is more information on my hard drive if you need it

Is this normal hard drive noise?
Shouldn't the hard drive be silent or near it?

My green edition from WD did

My green edition from WD did the same thing. It scared me real bad, because I have my families movies, pictures and all my PHD stuff I'm working on saved to it. I called WD, and they said it was all good and no worries.

I have it all backed up, but you should be good m8.

All HDD's make a noise when doing some strenuous reading or writing functions. The WD Caviar Black is a fantastic HDD series so be happy that you have one of the best components you can have in your rig.

hah, nice solution lad.

hah, nice solution lad. anyway, i tried everything around on the web, even solutions provided by the wd support site, but nothing worked. Finally, I contacted technical support. Let's see.....

p.s. I'm trying to figure out if it's a problem or a normal sound.. As I see here, some other people deal with it too. Could the disk be designed to function absolutely silently though.....?

Well if it's running fine,

Well if it's running fine, then try your best to ignore it. If you can't, I don't think it's too late for an RMA.

I've done a check for consistency, defragmentation completed, and a disk check as suggested in previous comments. The gridding sound's still there...

I have the same problem with

I have the same problem with the same HDD my friend.. I really, don't know if it is normal... I don't think it's affected by the windows xp installation (don't have 7 yet) and I suspect bad formatting is the issue... Though, I'm bored of reformatting... Any other ideas??? :)

I was a little disappointed

I was a little disappointed when my WD Caviar Black 640gb started making noises when I'd load something up on it. But when I put my headset on, I can't even hear it. So meh.

To be sure check disk, RIGHT

To be sure check disk, RIGHT CLICK on your drive, go to Properties, Tools, and click on CHECK NOW, and check the boxes' "automatically fix files system errors" & "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

I wouldn't consider the drive

I wouldn't consider the drive to be dying then...it's normal for some audible sound to come from the HDD when it's under heavy operation.

There is no clicking noise at

There is no clicking noise at all, it sounds kind of like scraping. The best way I can describe it is a chisel scraping across smooth concrete.

Can you be more descriptive?

Can you be more descriptive? Does it have a clicking-like noise? It's normal for this drive to be a little loud during heavy operation, it is a faster-preforming hard drive but if you're getting clicking sounds it could mean it is about to fail.
