Hey Rodney!

We need your help badly on a matter with HP. We have a DV9000 that recently started giving the dreaded error 116 regarding an Nvidia file. To make a very long story short we jumped through every hoop HP wanted us to and I also tried several other things short of removing the MB and re-flowing things with a heat gun. This is what I've found out about this laptop that I don't like and had I known it I wouldn't have bought this model. The GPU and CPU are on the same heat sink and fan and HP did a poor job of installing the graphics card to the MB, so bad that a class action lawsuit was filled about it and settled that I knew nothing about, till now. Also explains why I found a bazillion of the DV's on ebay with graphics issues. We have the accidental damage, spills, and drops coverage and a phone number to call them on Monday for our next coarse of action. The hp chat help already said "We can fix it for $400" but I feel that HP should just fix it or replace the thing with a model without the design flaw! So I need your advice on what we should do and then what you would do.

Thanks for your help!

So it's been a while since my

So it's been a while since my last post on the subject for a reason. We finally got HP to fix the laptop, but only after we proved to them we had a 3 year warranty on it. So they repaired it with the same crap just different revision. Since we got it back we now have had a bout of beeping when you try to power it (which went away on it's own), and a really annoying feedback when using the mic on ventrilo or other. We've tried to get HP to let us just send it back and they are not being responsive. So WE are going through another fight to get it fixed again! They are putting us off to try and make it out of the warranty period.

So we talked to a lead Case

So we talked to a lead Case manager who could do nothing for us even though he understood our position. At least he was sympathetic and seemed genuinely interested. However he suggested that before we go to court over the matter we contact Mr. Mark Hurd at HP. SO, now we will be composing a letter to him over the next 2 days. I plan on being as PC as possible, and use the compliment sandwich and everything, but I'm still going to bust his balls about the lie's, the deceitful behavior, and the unwillingness to admit fault and own up to the responsibility of the situation. I'm also going to hold in reserve the 21 page letter written by HPlies.com that shows collected data on these failures. At this point I've had it with HP and would rather get a refund and walk away from HP. I've been told that I could expect to get back 75% plus fees if we go to small claims court, that's not good enough, they must pay.

Keep us posted Werewolf486.

Woody just so you know HP has

Woody just so you know HP has condemned the gpu as bad so the ball is in their court! We are fighting them and will continue to until we come out of small claims court with a victory and hopefully we can push it farther, but we need people to file with the BBB, FTC, and the Attorney Generals Office about this issue. The EU (European Union) has a law that you can go after the retailer up to 6 years after the purchase of a defective product, yet HP ignores this constantly thus breaking laws!

Everyone I know who has had a Dell has had problems with it. The most common problems are with the batteries, which are cheap and seem to fail after 12 months or so, but I've also seen motherboard failure (again power related) just outside the 12 month warranty and various other issues. In addition to the hardware faults I've witnessed I don't think the build quality is very good either.

Conversely, my experience with HP laptops has generally been very good. The keyboards are robust and tactile and the screens are high quality and give a sharp bright image. The only fault I've witnessed with a HP laptop is broken hinges once where the metal was fatigued and snapped, but that's a fault that can affect any laptop over time so I don't consider it to be a significant issue.

One word, HP sucks. Never buy anything from them .. my friend had problems with his HP as well, after 6 months he had problems with hard drive he had to pay $150 to fix it, then a problem with power etc.. if you are going to buy a laptop I would go with Asus and Getaway, Acer are also good. Haven't tried Dell laptops yet but looking at my desktop from dell I really don't like them and won't buy anything from them anymore.

wow that's expensive...my point is that the damage these companies cause we have to pay for even though they should be paying it themselves.

I think the environmental damage caused by the Deepwater Horizon spill is a little more important than higher fuel prices dude...

Also, think yourself lucky you don't live here. Gas is around $3 a gallon (national average) there right? Here it's about £1.20 per litre. A US gallon is roughly 3.8 litres, so our price per US gallon is £4.56 ($6.76) - More than double what you pay.

this is like BP (weird HP BP

this is like BP (weird HP BP hmmm...) BP created the oil disaster, but us American taxpayers have to pay an extra 30 cents on gas now to pay for this disaster. why? they should be paying not us!

the same thing happened to my

the same thing happened to my 8400gs on my hp desktop. i wasnt getting errors, just that when i turn it onthere are artifacts everyhwere even on the boot screen. So i called them up and they wanted $250 to fix it. and its a $20 graphics card( this was last summer by the way) so i just told them no, and we bought a new one for $20 and it worked perfectly. and then 2 months ago my friend got ylod on his ps3 so we took it apart and reflowed it. so i said hey why not try reflowing the graphics card, i did that and it worked perfectly again. and to tell you on thing, they should fix it for free if u have that warranty, i rememer when i first got it 3 years ago, it came with a normal 1year warranty and they said if something is wrong they will fix it for free

I'm not familiar with that

I'm not familiar with that error code, what's generating it? If you post more info regarding the problem I'll offer troubleshooting advice if you want it.

As for dealing with HP, where you stand depends on whether the laptop is still under warranty or not. If it's not then they'll charge you for repairs and your options are fairly limited: you can accept and pay for the service, decline and go elsewhere, or you can write a formal letter of complaint and try to get them to repair it as a gesture of good will.

Even if you are under warranty you're still bound by its terms and conditions so you'll have to read through it to see where you stand.

When you're dealing with companies it's alway best to stick to written forms of communication so you have documented evidence of everything that is said by both parties. Avoid telephone calls and instant chat; stick to letters or emails and keep copies of all correspondence.

Finally, for the record, most laptops use a single heatsink and cooler assembly for the CPU and GPU, it's not uncommon and it's not an inherently bad design. I have a DV8000 myself and although it's a little battle scarred it's still going strong.
