I recently built my first computer and when I thought I had everything right I tried turning it on but just some of the lights turned on then it shut off. What should I check for? Here are some of the things I'm not sure of myself.
I also don't have enough stand offs to fit all the holes on the motherboard, I left some out but did all the ones around the sides. Could this cause a problem?
Also where do I connect the fans, I have 3 (back, front and on the side of the case). I don't know which place I'm suppose to connect them to. I could connect them into the NB-fan slot fine but the SYS-fan area pins are really different than the cord I have, it's (from left to right) GND, +12v / Speed Control, Sense, Reserve but my cord is 5v (red), GND (black), GND (black), V2 (yellow). Also, are you suppose to connect all the fans together with those 4 pin things and just connect 1 to the power supply cord?
I have OCZ mod x streampro 500w and which plug do I plug into the motherboard? There's 3 that come directly from the power supply, atx_12v_2x4, atx and another 4 connector thing. (http://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=ocz_modxstream_pro&image=ocz_mxp_mo...)
Finally, when I put on the CPU heat sink I slid it off (which I later learned is not recommended), which spread some of the paste around. Could my CPU be damaged?

Thanks Rodney, got it all
Thanks Rodney, got it all working now. Something must have been happening with the standoffs but everything is fine now and my CPU idles at 26c so everything should be fine. Thanks again.

There are twp PSU connections on that mobo, 1 & 2. There are three fan headers, 3, 4, & 5.
If you are having issues, try a minimum install, with the bare minimum hardware installed to try and diagnose the problem. And a re-install of the OS might be required.

My motherboard didn't come with it's own standoffs but my case came with some in the bag, there were only 6 in the bag and I put them in like this:

I don't know what a power fan adapter or what a motherboard fan headers are. My fans are like this http://imgur.com/VFu64.jpg am I suppose to connect them all with the molex pins or connect them individually to the power supply cord peripheral cord?
This mt motherboard layout and what what my motherboard manual says relating the power supply connections:

I'm guessing the 20/24pin is the big long one that is kinda split in 2 with the 2 arrows pointing toward each other and that is easy to plug in, and should I plug the 8pin one into the spot where it says atx_12v_2x4 and just ignore the 4pin?
Also, I took out all the stand offs and then put everything back in and hooked up the power supply like I described above and everything started running normally, would this mean that everything is fine relating to power supply and the motherboard and it wasn't shutting off due to excess heat on the CPU? The paste wasn't put on the CPU initially, it was one the heat sink then I put the heat sink on the CPU. I then slid it off cause I had it on backwards and put it back on the other way around, the paste covered the top of the CPU evenly, but it wasn't centered and was kind of smudged around to one side of the heat sink.

Questions directed at me has to be posted in the 'Ask Rodney' area to the forum. So in the future, please do so.
1. You really should install all motherboard standoffs so the motherboard rests evenly on the motherboard tray.
2. You can get power fan adapter, of connect the fan into the motherboard fan headers.
3. Usually you connect just the 20/24pin and the 4 or 4pin, but you need to refer to your motherboards user manual.
4. You could have damaged the CPU with excess heat, but most system will shut down and protect the CPU.
